Character Collection #1: Mixamillion

Part of the Character Collection series

A few months ago I was inspired by Thomas Perkins’ endless reimaginings of Composite Superman, among other established characters, to try my own version. Rather than an exact combination of two distinct individuals, I wanted his look to be more like an asymmetrical outfit inspired by Superman & Batman, and ended up with the first image. As I drew it I began to add more and more to the character’s backstory in my head, and quickly realized he was turning into his own thing. So I changed up the colors and gave him the name Mixamillion.

The drawing of the close up was where I really began taking him in a new direction and getting a feeling for his personality. The fake comic cover came soon after, and the spear drawing came a few months after that. Each time I consciously made small changes to his outfit and added hints of his story and life. He still has a way to go but he’s definitely at a point, at least to me, where he feels completely distinct from his original inspiration.

edit May 7, 2022:

It had been a while since I drew the guy, so I did. But this time I switched it up a little. I’ve been doing some Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman drawings and liked their new looks too much to let them just sit unused. So I folded them into Mixamillion’s outfit on the new drawing. I also modeled his hair after a fantastic sculpture of Spartacus that Goran Gligovic shared recently.

I think Mixamillion will just be one of those characters who looks a little different every time I draw him. The important thing is that the core is recognizable.
