Character Collection #2: V-Sapien

Part of the Character Collection series

In 2018 I had the idea of revisiting some of my older art with the intention of updating characters I'd essentially forgotten about for possible new projects. One of the first ones to inspire this concept, which I eventually called the Idea Garden, was the boomerang-wielding V-Man, who I made up when I was nine and only drew twice. V-Man's combination of a distinctive look and an utter lack of development made him the ideal candidate for the Idea Garden.

The result was V-Sapien, who stays true to both their predecessor's distinctive look and blank slate-ness, the latter now by design. In the many times I've drawn them since I like to alter their look slightly, and eventually this led to the idea of drawing the outfit on different body types, which kept the character(s?) fresh and compelling.

The Summer of 2021 saw V-Sapien premier in their own feature on Sunday (which has a new panel up as of this week), and I have plans for an unrelated follow up that I'll hopefully get to start work on sooner rather than later.

Alright, that’s it. Here’s some bonus concept art for a fake V-Sapien movie:

double bonus:
Here’s the childhood drawing the antagonist was based on.

I’ve been listening to A Tribe Called Quest’s seemingly forgotten The Love Movement a lot lately.
